Common reasons to test include suspected UTI, blood or protein in urine, diabetes monitoring and part of wider health checks. If additional tests would be useful, we’ll discuss them with you first.

Urine Analysis Test Newcastle – FAQ

If your question isn’t answered below, please contact us directly. We’ll be happy to advise the safest next step.
If you are in the UK and have urgent or emergency symptoms use NHS 111 or call 999.

What is a urine test (urinalysis) and why would I need one?

A urinalysis checks a small sample of urine to help investigate symptoms (like stinging or urgency), screen for conditions, or monitor known health issues. It can support diagnosis, guide treatment and track recovery.

Urine tests can indicate urinary tract infection (UTI), blood (haematuria), protein (possible kidney issues), glucose/ketones (diabetes monitoring), microscopic cells or crystals, and markers of inflammation. Your clinician interprets these findings alongside your symptoms.

Use the sterile pot provided and collect a midstream sample: start to pass urine, pause briefly, then collect the middle part of the flow without touching the inside of the container. Close the lid firmly, label it, and deliver it promptly as advised.

Do I need to prepare or fast for a urine test?

No fasting is usually needed. Drink fluids as normal. Avoid collecting a sample straight after strenuous exercise. If you’re menstruating or struggling to collect a clean sample, tell us and we’ll advise the best approach. Let us know about any antibiotics or new medicines as they can affect results.

Some checks are available the same day; others go to our partner laboratory and typically return within a few days. We’ll explain the timeline and share results by secure message, phone, or at a follow-up—along with plain-English guidance on what they mean.

Your clinician will explain the result, what it may indicate, and the next steps. This could include repeat testing, targeted treatment (for example for a UTI), blood tests or imaging, and referral if needed. We’ll agree a clear plan and follow-up.

Not sure if you need urine testing?

Tell us your symptoms and we’ll advise on the most appropriate next step.
