Medical Student GP Placement Newcastle: Join IDOS for a hands-on placement where GP, mental health and complementary therapies work together. Observe real cases, join team huddles and build skills you’ll take straight back into the medical field.
We welcome medical students for placements that showcase integrated, holistic healthcare in a multidisciplinary setting. Based in Newcastle, IDOS brings GP, mental health and complementary therapies under one roof. You’ll observe how clinicians collaborate on real cases, with time set aside for teaching and reflection.
We’re developing a regular student programme in partnership with Newcastle and Sunderland medical schools. Expect practical exposure to GP consulting, mental health pathways, sleep and shift-pattern medicine, diagnostics, and the role of complementary therapies, skills and knowledge you can take back into the medical field.
Your week blends supervised clinical observation with focused teaching:
Where possible, you’ll contribute to a small quality-improvement, patient-education or case-reflection piece mapped to your e-portfolio.
You’ll rotate between our GP rooms, therapy spaces and diagnostics area to see the full patient journey from assessment and explanation to follow-up. We’ll highlight sleep and shift-work considerations, mental health interfaces, and how complementary approaches (e.g., acupuncture, nutrition, exercise therapy) can support mainstream care. The aim is to deepen clinical reasoning, communication and safety awareness, not just “tick the box” for exposure.
Bring your university photo ID, DBS status, and immunisation evidence if required by your school. Dress professionally (bare-below-the-elbows for clinical areas) and arrive 10 minutes early on day one for a short induction covering consent, confidentiality and safeguarding.
A notebook or laptop for reflections is useful, and a stethoscope is optional.
We’ll share a brief consent script for patient introductions and a reading list on sleep/shift work, mental health signposting and integrated care so you get more from each session.
You’ll have a debrief with your supervisor to review learning outcomes and next steps. We’ll complete any required university forms, provide structured feedback, and sign attendance. Where appropriate, we’ll discuss opportunities to return for further sessions, continue a QI or education project, or contribute to patient-facing resources.
