Shiatsu

A calm, hands-on therapy that uses comfortable pressure and gentle stretches to ease tension and support overall wellbeing. One to one sessions at IDOS are tailored to how you feel on the day.

Rest, release and reset

Dominic Cleary’s traditional Shiatsu treatments restore physical, emotional, and spiritual balance through acupressure and meridian therapy. A complementary bodywork therapy that originated in Japan, literally
meaning ‘finger pressure’, shiatsu uses a variety of techniques like palming, thumbing, holding, pressing and stretching sensitively applied to specific parts of the body to rebalance and revitalise the chi flow. An excellent choice for relaxation, chronic fatigue, or emotional stress.

Your practitioner will ask about your goals, then work through a sequence designed to reduce stiffness, settle the nervous system and help you feel more at ease. We can coordinate with your IDOS GP or therapy team where useful so everything stays joined up and safe.

Who it is for: People who want a gentle but effective way to unwind, reduce day to day tension, improve body awareness and move more freely. Suitable for beginners.

How sessions run

You will remain fully clothed during treatments which take place on a padded mat at floor level, on a massage table or in a chair if lying down is unsuitable. We begin with a short check in, then use comfortable pressure along the back, shoulders, hips and limbs. Simple stretches and guided breathing help the body relax. Typical structure:

  • First session: brief history, areas of focus, full body sequence to release common tension spots.
  • Follow ups: progress based on your feedback, with options for desk friendly stretches, breathing to reduce stress and self care tips.
  • At home support: short routines you can use between sessions to keep gains going.

What to bring

Wear soft, loose clothing with sleeves and trousers that allow easy movement. Avoid heavy meals for two hours before your session. Tell us about any injuries, joint replacements, pregnancy or medical conditions so we can adapt everything for you.

“Attended today a wonderful, relaxing and professionally delivered Shiatsu workshop delivered by Dominic.”

Shiatsu – FAQ

If your question isn’t answered below, please contact us directly. We’ll be happy to advise the safest next step.
If you are in the UK and have urgent or emergency symptoms use NHS 111 or call 999.

What is shiatsu and how does it feel?

Shiatsu is a hands on therapy using comfortable, steady pressure and gentle stretches. Most people describe it as soothing and deeply relaxing.

It is often used to ease everyday muscle tension, support relaxation, improve flexibility and posture, and help you feel more grounded and calm. It works alongside, not instead of, medical care.

No. Shiatsu is usually given through light clothing. Please wear soft layers you can move in.

Is shiatsu safe if I have back, shoulder or knee issues?

Yes, with the right adaptations. Tell us about any conditions or injuries. Your practitioner will avoid aggravating positions and use lighter pressure where needed.

Many people feel a change in how they move and relax after the first session. Appointments are typically 45 to 60 minutes. We will agree a plan that fits your goals and schedule.

You may feel very relaxed or a little sleepy afterwards. Mild soreness is possible where pressure was applied and usually settles within a day. Drink water and rest if you need to.

Not sure if shiatsu is right for you?

Tell us your goals and any health concerns and we will advise whether shiatsu, another complementary therapy or a GP appointment is the best starting point for you.
